dipping into the low 20s by 5:00 a.m. we have team coverage on the weather. dozens of people in walnut creek braved the cold for a tree lighting ceremony. but first, we have anthony slaughter and the cold forecast. >> a freeze warning at least for one more night. tonight is expected to be one of the coldest nights across the bay area, temperatures that could fall not only into the low 20s but into the teens across parts of the napa valley. that's where we're headed. overnight lows, nap that 19, even san jose expected to get down to 22 degrees. even though we got down to 29. it hasn't been this cold since january 13 earlier this year. when we got down to 26 degrees. so again tonight, expecting to be one of the coldest nights. and here's the other thing. this is the eighth consecutive morning that we're going to be waking up with temperatures below 32 degrees. in napa. and the last time we saw something like this, a long-term cold snap, that was back january

10 where we were below freezing for our morning lows for 12 days in a row. 4 we all know the cold is tack a toll on your body. the california crops are starting to take their toll. monty, how cold is it where you are? >> it's pretty gold. in fact, this is the man made snow from the ice skating rink across the street. i've had it since about 6:00 tonight. you can see that it hasn't really melted at all. right now, it is a very chilly 33 dpst mere at walnut creek right now. the pitter cold is not keeping everyone indoors. the bitter cold air was very real.

>> the cash register outside and was just finishing up her eight-hour shift when we talk pd. >> i' got lots of layers on, a sweater, a jacket. my scarf, another jacket and long socks mittens. >> trees are freezing in the central valley where some farmers have lost 20% to 30% of their harvest. >> we're losing a lot of money in the deal and we may have to end up removing a tree. >> in the bay area, most of the wineries have finished their harvest for the season and are threatened by the recent freeze. >> the frost isn't going to give us trouble out here. there may be a few wineries that are biting their nails about the frost. but out here in the livermore valley, we're pretty well harvested and we're ready for a nice winter.

>> again, it's 33 degrees right now. experts say freezing temperatures are more dangerous for winery because that's when the vines are beginning to bud. monty francis, nbc bay area fuse. >> thank you, monty. well, this was the first significant weekend for skiing in the sierra as well. the storm dumped two to three feet of snow in the mountains friday night to saturday. this is video from kirkwood where officials reported 36 inches of new snow. that's the most of any resort up there. and most of the other resorts are open as well. but all are still noo need of a whole lot more snow to still be operational. there was a record setter today at the 31st annual california international marathon. organizers say a record 10,000 people braved the cold and took part in one of the coldest marathons for northern california in decades.

temperatures warmed up to the mid 30s dithe finish. storms make their way through texas and the midwest. more than 100,000 people are without power. and there's concern that tree limbs and power lines that are weighted down by that ice could cause new outages for the next several days. and the snow and ice made driving nearly impossible as you can see here. in wisconsin, a deadly pipe-up shut down a main freeway. >> to the best of my non, an excess of seven semis and 30 vehicles. >> you could barely see off the road. >> parts of the mid atlantaic and new england area are expecting more snow tomorrow. and in some areas officials are call for what they're saying is an historic event with the ice and snow. and you can track the freeze warning and forecast on our website. all you have to do is click on the weather tab. and there you can see temperature maps. you can also get the latest weather conditions. right when you wake up "today in

the bay." that coverage starts at 4:30 tomorrow morning. >> and now on to continuing coverage on the palo alto veteran who was released from north korea. some experts say that nation may have gained something from the high profile case of merrill newman. the 85-year-old man returned home to the bay area yesterday and reunited with his family. his wife told nbc bay area that her husband is resting today and they would like a little bit of privacy today as well. newman was accused of crimes dating back to the korean war. after being forced to publicly apologize, the government deported imh on what it calls humanitarian grounds. one expert says that apology may show just how powerful the current government is to its own people. >> they can use that information to demonstrate to their own population that the regime is in control and it can extract confessions from americans.

>> while newman is a free man tonight, north korea continues to hold another american citizen kenneth bay. henrikson says the christian missionary's fate may have made him a target. bay has been sentenced to 15 years for hostile act against the communist state. >> and new at 11:00, sonoma county deputies are investigating human remains found autoshilo regional park. a father called the sheriff's department saying he and his two children came across a human skull and tennis shoes in a creek bed. they plan to continue the investigation there tomorrow. we have an update now on the deputy who shot and killed a santa rosa teenager last month. the democrat is reporting that the deputy will return to work on tuesday. he won't be out in the field. he's been on leave since october 22. the deputy reportedly said he thought 13-year-old andy lopez was carrying a real ak-47 when he shot him.

stuz that was in fact a b.b. gun made to look real. "the chronicle" is reporting that three fire department commanders who were in charge of firefighting and rescue efforts after a crash had never taken a required training course for aircraft disasters. the fire chief said it wasn't vital that commanders take the disaster course, calling it very specialized training. and on tuesday in washington, d.c., federal officials plaen to hear from witnesses, the faa, boeing and others about the crash. the four pilots onboard will not be attending the hearing. three teenagers were killed and more than 180 passengers were hurt. nbc bay area's investigative unit is headed to d.c. for those hearings. steven stock will have live

reports on the investigation. well, fremont, san jose and san francisco are ranked among the top three large markets in the country to sell a home right now. one seller is listing this home for $400,000. it's been boarded up since a fire severely damaged it over a year ago. nbc bay area is in san jose with more on that. hello, kimberly. >> hello. you can see this home doesn't have a whole lot of curb appeal. it's close to downtown and steps away from zj znl state. there home is listed at $399,000. but it sneeds sop work. neighbors still have cell phone video of the fire that severely damaged it in june in 2012.

the bay area who helped the survivors of the typhoon in the philippines are back home tonight. one month ago, typhoon haiyan hit the philippines. family and friends gathered with the medical workers when they arrived back at home. one nurse said she tried not to cry when she heard all of their stories. >> they told me about how they survived. they told me about their stories, about the daughtering she lost a daughter. they told me thhow they survive. and it was very hard, difficult to listen to the stories. but i have to listen. >> the category five storm killed more than 5,000 people

and displaced more than 4 million more. on the peninsula, a mountain lion was found in half moon bay. soon you may be able to order groceries from amazon. according to a report on all things digital, the company may announce the launch of amazon fresh here in san francisco this coming tuesday. the program which delivers produce, meat, milk and anything else you can find at the grocery store is already running in seattle and los angeles. groceries will be delivered the day or the day after you order them, depending i assume on what you want. the program costs $299 a year to participate. >> this hol diseason, three weeks between thanksgiving and christmas. today, it was a busy one at

you can see what we're talking about, temperatures overnight. potential for upper teeps. a nice rebound by 1:00 in the afternoon. temperatures will top out near 50. but againer it's going to be a very cold start. the skycam a network, the southbound all the way to the northbound. but very cold in the northbound, 27 degrees for most of those communities. and you'll notice patchy frost on those roadways tomorrow morning. you'll want to take it easy,

both hands on the wheel. however, it's still going to be dold the next couple of days. this thing is going to slide very close to us monday and tuesday. but you'll find, though, once we head to the middle part of this week, temperatures go close from 50, closer to 60. so a slight warming, at least it will put us closer to average. napa valley will take us to the lower locations. even though we're talking about a warming trend, it's all relative here.

a 6-year-old boy with dreams to become an astronaut is on a mission to save nasa. he found out congress is cutting funding to the space program. he thought his allowance would help out a little bit. but then after talking with his family, he decided to create an on line petition on the white house website. his mage to president obama, increase funding for nasa so that children can dream of exploring the universe.
